Honda India is gearing up for a major push in the electric and hybrid segment. Takuya Tsumura, CEO of Honda Cars India, has confirmed that the company’s first full-electric vehicle (EV) will be launched in India in 2026. This upcoming EV will be based on the Elevate platform but will feature a completely new nameplate and design, marking Honda’s serious entry into the Indian EV market.

Between 2026 and 2027, Honda India will introduce three electrified models. One of them will be a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) inspired by the Elevate, while the other two models will also feature hybrid or full-electric technology. Tsumura stated, “As part of our global policy, we will continue increasing the share of electrified vehicles in our lineup.”

Earlier this year, it was reported that Honda is working on the ACE project (Asian Compact Electric), which is also based on the Elevate. The vehicle is expected to be ready by 2026, with 50-70% of the units produced in India planned for export to key markets, including Japan.

EVs Take Priority, But Strong Hybrids Remain Part of Honda’s Future

Honda India was the first mass-market manufacturer to introduce strong-hybrid technology with the City, but it didn’t become mainstream as expected. For the next phase of electrification, EVs are more critical due to CAFÉ 3 norms coming into effect in 2027. Tsumura added, “That’s why we are starting with an Elevate-based EV. Future models will also include hybrid technology.”

Among plug-in hybrids, strong hybrids, and range extenders, Honda believes strong hybrids are currently more relevant for the Indian market. However, further details about hybrid launches are yet to be revealed.

Shift from Sedans to SUVs: Honda Plans Five SUV Models by 2030

With market trends leaning towards SUVs, Honda India is focusing on expanding its SUV portfolio. Tsumura said, “By 2030, we plan to have five SUV models.”

Currently, Honda’s market share in India has fallen below 1.5%, down from 2.4% in 2022-23, mainly due to declining demand for sedans. Marketing Director Ryuto Shimizu stated, “Indian customers will receive exciting news about new models and powertrains from 2026-27. It’s just a matter of time.”
