Skoda is considering entering the India EV market with its first locally manufactured electric car between April 2027 and March 2028, according to Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda India. While Skoda already offers three electric cars globally and aims to expand the lineup to five by next year, the Indian EV strategy is still in its early stages. The company is focusing on building a local manufacturing ecosystem and waiting for the country’s charging infrastructure to mature before fully committing.
Skoda’s India-Made EV to Feature Unique Design, Dual Battery Options, and 4.5-Metre Length for Local Market Needs
The first Skoda India EV will be designed specifically for the Indian market, according to former Brand Director Petr Janeba. The model development is ongoing, and the car is expected to measure around 4.5 metres in length. Skoda is reportedly planning two battery pack options – one targeting city drivers and budget-conscious customers, and another for those seeking long-range performance for intercity travel. This approach aims to cater to diverse Indian EV buyers while balancing affordability and practicality.
Skoda Testing Global EVs and Waiting for Policy Clarity Before Launching Locally Made Electric Cars in India
Skoda has showcased and tested global EV models in India, including the pre-facelift Enyaq in 2022 and the Elroq at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. While there is potential to bring two or all three of its global EVs as low-volume imports, the company appears to have paused large-scale plans pending a favorable EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) outcome. Meanwhile, the focus remains on strengthening local EV design, production capabilities, and market readiness before the first India-made model hits the roads.
Skoda’s plan for a first locally manufactured electric car in India represents a strategic step towards electrification, balancing market readiness, regulatory environment, and consumer expectations. The 2027–2028 timeframe could be a turning point for the brand in India’s fast-growing EV segment.
